DeGeneres' Oscar Selfie is a Record Breaker
Did you watch the Oscars? The highlights are making the internet rounds—from Matthew McConaughey thanking himself to Lupita’s tear-jerker of an acceptance speech to the pizza delivery guy and his pizza, but the biggest news may be Ellen DeGeneres’ record-breaking Oscar selfie.
Currently at 2.5 million retweets and counting, the shot contains a staggering amount of Hollywood’s most beautiful people, including Brangelina, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lawrence, Magic Mike (okay, Channing Tatum) and Kevin Spacey. Taken by Bradley Cooper on a Samsung smartphone (yes, this was some clever and probably very expensive product placement), Ellen captioned the Oscar selfie, “If only Bradley’s arm was longer. Best photo ever. #oscars”.
In less than an hour, DeGenere’s photo was up to 871,000 retweets, with 210,000 favorites, before momentarily breaking Twitter. The previous record of 778,424 retweets was held by President Barack Obama, with his election night victory photo of him hugging wife Michelle Obama. Though it can be argued that Ellen’s photo lacks the historical significance and careful composition of President Obama’s, it cannot be denied that this is truly the selfie to end all selfies.
Congratulations to both Ellen and Samsung for the win.
